- If you're still using a Mac OS X the time will come when your computer won't boot, or a problem may arise where you can't take control of the device, and booting from an OS X installation media will be required. This is why it's recommended that you make a Mac OS X bootable USB when your Mac is in working conditions.

The macOS Catalina installation takes some time so don't restart ahead of when the setup screen pops up, but based on a multitude of reports, resetting in this way if it gets stuck appears. I'm getting a similar problem on my late 2010 iMac. I don't have any trouble with my Macbook Air (2013) on Mavericks, just my iMac. It's also not a problem with my router, everything else works perfectly in my house (iPads, iPhones, Laptops, Xbox etc). Seems like a problem with 2010 machines. – user2804274 Nov 3 '13 at 16:24.

I have been having a strange issue with my 2013 11' MacBook Air (Mavericks 10.9.2). It has seemed very pokey on internet lately. The past couple of weeks in some places I have not been able to get online via wifi, including GOGO on Delta, which has never been a problem (iPad and iPhone got on right away). So back to my house, which is on a Time Warner 30Mbps cable internet service. A browser speed test is only showing 1-3Mbps, which is on a Time Warner 30Mbps internet service. I am getting terrible speeds as I mentioned. Today I reset the modem and my airport extreme. Then I took a MacBook Pro I have and went direct into modem with ethernet cable and speed went into the low 50Mbps!!!!! So then I took the same MacBook Pro and went back to wifi, speed test still very strong - 30Mbps or better. But back to my MacBook Air, and speed test only 1-3Mbps. I also tried speed test on my iPhone, and it also shows 20-30Mbps. So now I am convinced something is weird in my MacBook Air - the network and airport extreme don't seem to be the problem. I dont know what else to do on the MacBook Air to try and resolve this issue. Can anyone give me any ideas? I tried zapping the PRAM, still no help. Thanks for any input or ideas!
Make a 'Genius' appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don't erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

My wife and I just got new MacBook Airs, a loaded 11.6' for her, 13.3' for me (1.6 GHz 4GB/128GB and 2.13 GHz 4GB/256GB). We connect via a 45 Mbit/s download, 35 Mbit/s upload fiber connection with a Linksys WRT610N simultaneous dual-band wireless access point. My 13.3' Air works wonderfully in all respects, amazingly snappy at every task and fast 45/35 tested bandwidth via 5GHz Wireless N.
My wife's 11.6' Air, when connected to the 5 GHz band via Wireless N, tests very well when sitting on a table. But put it on your lap, and the connection becomes extremely erratic, with intermittent loss of connection when connected via LogMeIn, and download bandwidth tested at 1-10 Mbit/s only (though 10-20 Mbit/s upload). Connected at 2.4 GHz, it does fine at 45/35 bandwidth.
This is not acceptable, as the 5 GHz band is less crowded and therefore less prone to interference. Anyone else notice this phenomenon?

Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
Restart the computer.

My roommates laptop PC can connect fine. I need some help fixing it. Why is it not finding ANY networks at all?
Open System Profiler and check if the compter can still recognize your wireless device. Try resetting the SMC as well and see if this helps.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964I have a brand new MacBook Air and am new to Macs, but have a very good understanding of PCs. I constantly have to reenter our wireless security code for Wi-fi. Now I am receiving a message that says 'the computer was unable to join the wi-fi network you selected'. What am I doing wrong?
After a 30 minute phone call with Support, nothing worked still! In the end he suggested changing the channel of the wireless router/modem. I tried to do this (after research online on my imac) and then lost all internet connection. The router/moden no longer worked at all! Then had to call the support line for the router; spent another hour or so trying things, but to no avail. In the end have had to buy a new modern modem router (Belkin Dual band N+ PLAY N600 DB) and so far ...........it's working! But we only bought it this morning. Will report back another day with an update!
My partner's goes to sleep instantly, mine takes about 30 seconds - most obvious difference is that I have MS Office installed (but not running). I've tried resetting SMC but no benefit. Help would be much appreciated.
No, nothing whatsoever. Have just upgraded to the latest OS (10.8.2? Don't have the MacBook to hand, but was latest a few hours ago :-D), but hasn't helped. Presumably some process is running that takes a while to close - but wary of closing down processes without knowing for sure what they're doing!
In the *past* I had an external DVD drive attached - used it when installing MS Office - but hasn't been connected for months, and MacBook has been switched on and off and restarted several times since.
Grateful for any help you can give!
cheers,

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ('$') to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.why is my MacBook Air running slow and I bought the 11 inch with all memory and turbo boost
Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences.. ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter 'web' (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named 'Safari Web Content' is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference? After the newly update OS X Update 10.9.4, the shut down of my MacBook Air slows down. It will stay several seconds more than before the update. This happens every time I try to shut down my MacBook, please meet my problem.

Who? ITS VERY important when doing a restore, in fact you DO NOT want to do a wifi restore
The pros all have that Ethernet adapter,.. that should tell you something. An Ethernet restore via that 'thing' makes restoring the OSX about 8X faster.
Its called a Gigabit Ethernet adapter for a reason.

Mar 2, 2015, 06:00:52 PM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/discoveryd_2015-03-02-180052_[redacted].crashBoy, I was looking at a discussion of this from TODAY, about a half hour ago, and now can't find it.
'Why is my MacBook Pro slow?' brings 'screen tearing issue' and other things not related to my problem.
I got and ran Easyfind, and got rid of MacKeeper.
What else do I need to do?
I have the beach ball way too often.
I just made an iMovie, but optimizing it for YouTube is impossible. Boxes keep getting grayed out; complete hangup.
Can easyfind help further?
Thank you.Hi Tomo 2,
Kim Komando said get Sophos, so I did. Arabic fonts online. I see it found something called Bredo-K on Nov. 22.
It's now scanning my OVER 5 MILLION FILES. Seriously, I don't think I need that many.
Right now about 50% of CPU idle,
about 1.03 GB Ram free.
Sophos is using about 90% of whatever.
This scanning could take all weekend. I need to get rid of some stuff. Hard to know what, though.
Thanks for any more ideas.
JerryWhy is my MacBook so slow to start up? I've recently cleared more space on the start-up disk (currently has 49GB of the 74GB capacity), but it still takes about 2 minutes to start up from cold. Any suggestions?
Hi Stevie,
several thing could caused that, like a lot of application that need to be opened during start up, your default boot up destination is not your internal HD (so it will try to look to optical first, 'clogged HD', etc.
Try to optimize and repair permission in your macbook HD using ONYX or MAcHelpMate,

Try to reset PRAM:

Open system preference: account : Login item and uncheck application that you don't want to start automatically.
Good Luck
